Defence Ministry and HAL Sign ₹458 Cr Contract for Upgraded Dornier Aircraft for Coast Guard
The Ministry of Defence has signed a contract with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) to procure two upgraded Dornier aircraft for the Indian Coast Guard (ICG), along with an associated engineering support package. The contract is valued at ₹458.87 crore.
- The aircraft will be acquired under the 'Buy (Indian) Category' as stated by the ministry. They will be equipped with advanced features, including a glass cockpit, maritime patrol radar, electro-optic infrared device, and mission management system.
- According to the ministry, the addition of these aircraft will enhance the aerial surveillance capabilities of the ICG in their maritime areas of responsibility. The Dornier aircraft are being manufactured indigenously at HAL's Transport Aircraft Division in Kanpur, aligning with the government's 'Make in India' initiative and contributing to the goal of achieving self-reliance in the defense sector.
- Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh launched the NCC Integrated Software in New Delhi, marking a significant step towards promoting digitization and aligning with the Digital India mission. Developed in partnership with the Bhaskaracharya Institute for Space Applications and Geo Informatics (BISAG), the software serves as a single-window interactive platform for NCC Cadets, designed on the 'Entry to Exit Model'.
- The NCC Integrated Software is based on the vision of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, emphasizing the concept of "Once a Cadet always a cadet." It aims to digitize the entire process, starting from enrollment as a cadet in NCC until the exit registration as an alumni. This software enables seamless issuance of certificates and creates an all-India database of NCC cadets, facilitating their employment.
During the event, the NCC and State Bank of India (SBI) also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in the presence of the Raksha Mantri. The MoU aims to open zero-balance accounts for all NCC Cadets under SBI's "Pahli Udaan" scheme, providing them with debit card, chequebook, and passbook facilities. Approximately 5 lakh cadets will benefit from this MoU annually. The accounts will remain active until completion of training or reaching 18 years of age, enabling cadets to access the national banking system and avail themselves of government schemes through direct benefit transfer (DBT) into their accounts.
Shravani Mela Commences in Deoghar, Jharkhand
- The Shravani Mela, one of the largest religious gatherings in the eastern region of India, was inaugurated in Deoghar district, Jharkhand, on Monday. The fair was officially opened by State Agriculture Minister Badal Patralekh at Kanwariyapath in Dumma, which borders Bihar. Traditionally, the mela takes place for a month during the month of 'Shravan' according to the Saka Calendar. However, this year, the fair will span two consecutive months, from July 3 to August 31.

- KM Vasudevan Namboothiri, a celebrated illustrator, sculptor, and line sketch artist, has passed away at the age of 97. He breathed his last at a private hospital in Kottakkal on Friday, where he was receiving treatment for age-related ailments.
- Throughout his illustrious career spanning several decades, Namboothiri contributed his artistic talents to numerous literary publications in the state. He created captivating illustrations for the works of eminent figures in Malayalam literature, including Jnanpith laureates M T Vasudevan Nair, Thakazhi Sivasankara Pillai, S K Pottakkad, and legends like Vaikom Muhammad Basheer.
- Born in Ponnani, Kerala, in 1925, Namboothiri's fascination with painting and sculpture began in his childhood, inspired by a nearby temple. He studied painting at the Madras School of Fine Arts and was a disciple of the renowned artist K C S Paniker. He drew inspiration from acclaimed painters like Debi Prasad Roy Chowdhury and S Dhanapal.

Major Bakhtawar Singh Brar (retd), one of the oldest veterans of the Kumaon Regiment in the Indian Army, has passed away at the age of 109 in the US. The news of Major Brar's demise was shared on Twitter by author Jai Samota and confirmed by Colonel NN Bhatia (retd), a veteran of the Kumaon Regiment with a deep understanding of its history.
- Born in November 1913 in Faridkot district, Major Brar initially served in the Faridkot State Forces before joning the 6 Kumaon Regiment. He retired from service in 1963.
- In 1934, Major Brar joined the State Forces of the Maharaja of Faridkot. He displayed exceptional leadership during his service and was awarded the Mention-in-Despatches by the King of England in 1942 for his brave actions against the Pathans in Waziristan.
- Commissioned into the 6 Kumaon Regiment in 1945, Major Brar actively participated in World War II in Burma. His remarkable dedication and efforts during the rescue operation in Baltal led to his second Mention-in-Despatches on November 8, 1957.
- Major Brar's contributions were further recognized when he led a contingent of 6 Kumaon in the Republic Day Parade in 1959. He also received the Chief of Army Staff 'Commendation Card' for his service in Jammu and Kashmir in 1960. In March 1960, he was posted to the 111 Infantry Battalion (TA).

RBI Appoints P. Vasudevan as New Executive Director
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has appointed P. Vasudevan as an executive director, with his appointment becoming effective from July 3, 2023.
- According to a statement by the RBI, Vasudevan will be responsible for overseeing the Department of Currency Management, Corporate Strategy and Budget Department (excluding Budget & Funds), and the Enforcement Department.
- Prior to his promotion as executive director, Vasudevan held the position of Chief General Manager-in-charge of the Department of Payment and Settlement Systems.
- Having served in the Reserve Bank for nearly 30 years, Vasudevan has extensive experience in the supervision of banks and non-banking financial companies, payment and settlement systems, and various other areas within the RBI. He has also previously served as a Member of Faculty at the Bankers' Training College.

National Water Mission and Indian Plumbing Association Sign MoU to Enhance Water Use Efficiency

132nd Durand Cup Tournament Held in Kolkata
- The 132nd edition of the Durand Cup, India's oldest football tournament, witnessed the commencement of its "Trophy Tour" on June 30, 2023, at a ceremony held at Manekshaw Centre, Delhi Cantt. The tour was officially flagged off by Chief of Army Staff General Manoj Pandey, Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhary, and President of All India Football Federation (AIFF) Kalyan Choubey.
- Scheduled to take place from August 3 to September 3, 2023, in Kolkata, the tournament will feature the participation of 24 teams, including clubs from Nepal, Bhutan, and Bangladesh. This edition marks the return of foreign teams after a hiatus of 27 years. The Durand Cup, organized by the Durand Football Tournament Society (DFTS) under the auspices of the All India Football Federation (AIFF), is open to all club teams.
The Durand Cup has always been synonymous with excellence, sportsmanship, and intense competition in the realm of sports. First held in 1888 at Dagshai, Himachal Pradesh, the tournament derived its name from Mortimer Durand, the then Foreign Secretary in charge of India. Initially restricted to British soldiers, it was later opened up to civilians. Among the participating teams, Mohun Bagan and East Bengal have emerged as the most successful, having secured the title on sixteen occasions.
Tushar Mehta Reappointed as Solicitor General of India for 3 More Years
- The senior advocate and Solicitor General Tushar Mehta has been reappointed as the Solicitor General of India for an additional period of three years, along with his team of six additional solicitor generals (ASG) in the Supreme Court.
- The decision was made by the Appointments Committee of Cabinet (ACC) as Mehta's term, along with the other law officers in the top court, came to an end on Friday. Mehta has been serving as the SG since October 2018.
The ACC order approving the re-appointment has extended the term of the Solicitor General for a period of three years or until further orders. The six other law officers who serve as ASGs in the Supreme Court and have received extensions are Vikramjeet Banerjee, KM Nataraj, Balbir Singh, Suryaprakash V Raju, N Venkatraman, and Aishwarya Bhati. However, no orders have been issued yet for re-appointing three ASGs – Madhavi Divan, Sanjay Jain, and Jayant K Sud – whose terms will come to an end on Friday.

India’s First ‘Police Drone Unit’ Launched in Chennai
- In a pioneering initiative in India, the Greater Chennai Police (GCP) has established a 'Drone Police Unit' to support law enforcement with aerial surveillance. This unit will prove particularly beneficial for monitoring large gatherings, conducting real-time checks on vehicle registration data, and identifying suspects.
- The project, costing approximately Rs 3.6 crore, was inaugurated by the outgoing Tamil Nadu Director General of Police (DGP), C Sylendra Babu, in the presence of Chennai Police Commissioner Shankar Jiwal at Besant Avenue, Adyar.
The police have deployed a total of nine drones, categorized as follows: Quick Response Surveillance Drones (6), Heavy Lift Multirotor Drone (1), and Long Range Survey Wing Place (2). All drones are equipped with built-in artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities and can operate within a range of 5-10 km from the ground station.

Anurag Verma takes charge as Punjab Chief Secretary

PM Modi inaugurates the 17th Indian Cooperative Congress
