How to Solve Basic Statement and Assumption Question | Logical Reasoning for CLAT PDF Download

The statements and assumptions question are the crucial part of reasoning section for CLAT examination. The questions from statements and assumptions feature regularly in exams. They are variant of verbal reasoning questions asked to check the efficiency of decision making skill of aspirants.

In this questions statement is given in the question and it is followed by two or more assumptions. For the correct answer, the student needs to access the given statement and decide which of the given assumption is implicit to the statement in the question above. To solve the questions you need to follow a pattern and thus it becomes essential to know what statement and assumptions stand for.

We use statements daily in the form of communication. It is a very integral part of our speech whenever we speak with others. But in term of communication, most of the ideas are  conveyed in the speech and thus remain unuttered. So to find a way to utter these ideas we use implications. These implications are indirectly used in our statements .

An assumption is something that can be supposed by the implied meaning of the given statement. Imply means “to suggest or Express indirectly”. Often people do not speak what is in their mind or what they think in in totality, but we can infer  or assume what must have been in their Mind from the statement made by them. For example when somebody says an honest officer has come to the city, and so crime will be checked then the assumption you make is that if officer is honest, he could put a check on crime.

Thus, when we say something we do not Express everything, every aspect of our ideas into words. We tend to leave many things are Idea and said, which may be defined as an assumption. If it is that part of an argument on the basis of which we say something. Now, we can say that there is a option is the part of an argument which is not expressed or said explicitly as it is assumed or understood intrinsically.

Rules to solve these questions.

  • Assumption is always indefinite and positive.
  • Some words like some, to large extent, many, much, exist in the assumption that will always be implicit (TRUE).
  • Any assumption that is conveying the message of advertisement, notice, appeal that assumption will always be implicit (True).
  • If any assumption is talking about past and future that assumption will always be explicit (False)
  • Comparison always wrong.
  • If any assumptions showing the word like suggestion, order, request that will always be implicit(True). Restatement is never implicit.

Now when we try to solve this questions, the question might look difficult because our brain is so good at understanding unstated assumptions that we don’t even notice them. So if you think like ok we normally do when there is a risk of missing the assumption actually made making it even harder to quickly identify them. Also, in these assumption questions, we have to identify the passage authors assumption not our own.

Caution to be taken to solve these questions.
  • Leaving aside your logic about how things work helps.
  • Do not bring in your own assumptions about things that are not necessarily common knowledge or may not always be true.
  • “Assumption” in the questions is something that the author believes to be true.

Examples

For all questions below statement is given which will be followed by assumptions numbered as 1 and 2. You have to consider the statement and the following is assumptions and decide and decide which of the assumption are implicit.

Give your answer as per below options

  • If only assumption 1 is implicit.
  • If only assumption 2 is implicit
  • If neither 1 nor 2 is implicit.
  • If both 1 and 2 are implicit.

Statement:
The district authority has decided to set up wireless communication along the coast line in the view of cyclonic storm hitting the coast.

Assumption:

  • The telephone communication may be paralyzed due to the cyclonic storm.
  • The wireless communication system may be able to withstand the Fury of cyclonic storm.

Ans: (d)
both the assumption are implicit in the statement. It is mentioned in the statement that wireless communication system are to be set up along the coastline in the view of cyclonic storm hitting the coast. Therefore, it can be safely assume that telephone communication may be paralyzed due to the cyclonic storm. For similar reason, assumption 2 to is also implicit in the statement.

Statement:

The Government of India has appointed joint parliamentary committee to investigate into the recent stock market crash.

Assumptions:

  • The member of committee may possess requisite expertise to carry out the investigation.
  • The people responsible for the crash may destroy all their documents before the committee laid their hands on them.

Ans: (a)
Only assumption 1 is implicit in the statement. The joint parliamentary committee has been formed assuming that its members may carry out investigation properly. Is Amazon 2 is not implicit in the statement because in that case there is no need to appoint a joint parliamentary committee.
