Broiler Feed Formulations and Nutrition

Types of Broiler Rations

Broilers are typically fed with two main types of rations:

  • Broiler starter: Given up to five weeks of age.
  • Broiler finisher: Can be continued until the marketing age.
Broiler Ration Composition:
  • Broiler ration contains around 23 to 24 percent protein with a Cal (M.E.) protein ratio of approximately 130.
  • It is challenging to achieve such high energy levels in practical rations without adding fat or oil as an energy source.
  • In broiler finisher ration, protein levels are slightly reduced to 20 or 21 percent with a metabolizable energy of 3100 Kcal per kg.
  • An ideal ratio of 150 to 155 is sought in finisher ration.
Vitamins in Broilers:
  • Nutritionists adjust vitamin levels, particularly vitamins A and K, based on farm conditions to support optimal bird growth.
  • Increased vitamin levels are recommended, especially in cases where there is a risk of mild coccidiosis.
Amino Acids:
  • Methionine is the most crucial amino acid in typical broiler feeds.
  • A deficiency in methionine may lead to sub-optimal broiler performance.
  • Meeting methionine and cystine requirements can enhance the feed conversion ratio of broilers.
Coccidiostats in Broiler Rations:
  • Coccidiostats are consistently added to broiler rations to prevent coccidiosis.
  • It is recommended to rotate between different coccidiostats to prevent protozoa from developing tolerance.
Examples of Starter and Finisher Rations:
  • Provided below are some examples of starter and finisher rations used in broilers.

FAQs on Feed Formulations for Broilers at Different Ages - Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Science Optional for UPSC

1. What are the key components of broiler feed formulations?
Ans. Broiler feed formulations typically include ingredients such as grains, protein sources, fats, vitamins, minerals, and additives to meet the nutritional requirements of broilers at different growth stages.
2. Why are vitamins essential in broiler rations?
Ans. Vitamins play a crucial role in the growth, development, and overall health of broilers. They are essential for various metabolic processes and help in maintaining the immune system, vision, and reproductive functions.
3. What are amino acids and their significance in broiler nutrition?
Ans. Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins, and they are essential for growth, muscle development, and overall performance in broilers. They must be provided in the feed formulations to ensure optimal protein synthesis and growth.
4. What is the importance of coccidiostats in broiler rations?
Ans. Coccidiostats are additives used in broiler rations to prevent coccidiosis, a common parasitic disease in poultry. By including coccidiostats in the feed formulations, broilers can be protected from the harmful effects of coccidia and maintain good health.
5. Can you provide examples of starter and finisher rations for broilers?
Ans. Starter rations for broilers typically contain higher protein levels to support rapid growth in the early stages, while finisher rations have lower protein levels and higher energy content to promote weight gain and muscle development towards the end of the rearing period.
