FAQs on Detailed Index - History Section - RAS RPSC Prelims Preparation - Notes, Study Material & Tests - RPSC RAS (Rajasthan)

1. What is the significance of the Indus Valley Civilization in Indian history?
Ans. The Indus Valley Civilization was one of the earliest civilizations in the world, flourishing in the northwestern regions of the Indian subcontinent from around 3300 BCE to 1300 BCE. It is significant for its advanced urban planning, architecture, trade, and art. The civilization is also important because it produced one of the longest surviving scripts in the world, the Indus script, which has not yet been deciphered.
2. How did the Mauryan Empire rise to power in ancient India?
Ans. The Mauryan Empire was founded by Chandragupta Maurya in 322 BCE. He overthrew the Nanda dynasty and expanded his empire through conquest and diplomacy. He was succeeded by his son Bindusara, who further expanded the empire by conquering the Deccan region and parts of present-day Iran and Afghanistan. The most famous Mauryan emperor, Ashoka, ruled from 268 BCE to 232 BCE and is known for his conversion to Buddhism and his efforts to spread the religion across his empire.
3. What was the impact of British colonialism on India's economy?
Ans. British colonialism had a significant impact on India's economy. The British introduced a new system of land ownership and revenue collection, which led to the displacement of traditional agricultural practices and the exploitation of farmers. They also established a number of industries, such as textiles, railways, and shipping, which contributed to the growth of the economy but were largely controlled by British businesses. India's economy became heavily dependent on exports of raw materials, such as cotton and tea, which benefited the British economy but left India vulnerable to fluctuations in global markets.
4. How did India gain independence from British rule?
Ans. India gained independence from British rule on August 15, 1947, after a long struggle for freedom led by Indian nationalist leaders such as Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, and Subhas Chandra Bose. The movement for independence included nonviolent protests, civil disobedience campaigns, and armed rebellion. The British government finally agreed to grant independence to India after World War II, when it became clear that their hold on India was no longer tenable.
5. Who were the main leaders of the Indian freedom struggle?
Ans. The Indian freedom struggle was led by a number of prominent leaders, including Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Subhas Chandra Bose, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, and Bhagat Singh. Mahatma Gandhi is perhaps the most well-known leader of the movement, known for his philosophy of nonviolent resistance and civil disobedience. Jawaharlal Nehru was India's first Prime Minister and a key figure in the fight for independence. Subhas Chandra Bose was a militant nationalist who formed the Indian National Army to fight against the British. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was an important leader who played a key role in the integration of India after independence, while Bhagat Singh was a revolutionary who fought against British rule through armed struggle.
