The moneylenders and shopkeepers of Supa village in Poona district woke up to a dreaded sight one day in the summer of 1875 when a group of peasants attacked them, demanding their account books and debt bonds. These were burnt and destroyed. They had revolted against the moneylenders and the movement soon spread to neighbouring villages over an area of 6500 sq.km. The Deccan ryots were clearly enraged at the urban sahukars and their counterparts in the rural areas – the moneylenders.
Reasons which led the ryots to an uprising were :
1. New revenue system : The colonial state learning from its mistake in Bengal introduced the Ryotwari Settlement in the Deccan whereby the revenue payment was directly settled with the ryots. The demand set was so high that it was impossible for the ryots to pay up, forcing them to be immeresed in debts.
2. Impact of American Civil War : The Civil War in America in 1861 resulted in crashing of cotton exports to Britain causing widespread panic among cloth merchants. Cotton imports from Deccan increased during this time. Increased cotton cultivation however helped only a few rich farmers, rest of them were further pushed into debt.
3. Insensitive Moneylenders : Moneylenders now refused to give any more loans to the ryots who were in huge distress. In addition to this, they charged extremely high rates of interest breaking all customary norms. Failure of debt payment led to losing all their possessions.
The wrath of the peasants knew no bounds after facing such grave humiliations.
