First the food is searched with the help of antennae and maxillary and labial palps as they bear sense organs. The pro-legs pick up and bring food to the pre-oral cavity. The labium and labrum also help the pro-legs in this action. In the pre-oral cavity, the food is masticated by teeth present on the mandibles. The lacinia present in the maxillae also cut the food into smaller particles.
When the two mandibles are in action, the food is held in proper position by lacinia and galea of maxillae, glossa and paraglossa of labium. The labrum and labium prevent the escape of food material from mandibular action. The food is mixed with the saliva poured from the salivary glands in the pre-oral cavity.
