There is nothing wrong in having a back up plan.

Infact, I would say a matured individual will always have an alternative plan of sustaining himself if plan 1 doesnt work.

Back up plans ,based on educational background
I generally recommend candidates to be aware of their job prospects once they complete their graduation. Stay in touch with your academic subjects, college friends and professors and find out the industry updates of your educational background. Do build atleast two to three good contacts, who can help you get a job ,if the doors of UPSC dont seem like opening for you.
If you are too good at any subject, you can also explore teaching for competitive exams as a career . It is rewarding as well as satisfactory.Back up plans based on your passion
There are some students who have made their passion as a career after UPSC has rejected them .Few of them have ventured into arts, journalism, movies, softskill training , entrepreneurship, acting, music, etc.
Back up plans, based on your family background.
There are students who come from a business background or a clerical background .They go back to their background using the support of their parents, when they fail to clear UPSC.
No matter how much you plan for life, life will surprise you in its own way.
While having a back up plan is always wise, thinking too much about it is an utter waste of time.
