According to law of multiple proportion same element cqn possess different proportion in different compounds.
This is a very nice example of law of multiple proportion.
in CuO oxidation no. of Cu is +2 while that of oxygen is -2.
But in Cu2O oxidation number of Cu is +1 and that of oxygen is -2.

Law of Multiple Proportions
The law of multiple proportions states that when two elements form more than one compound, the masses of one element that combine with a fixed mass of the other element are in ratios of small whole numbers.

Explanation

CuO and CuO2 are examples of compounds of copper and oxygen. In CuO, the mass ratio of copper to oxygen is 1:1, while in CuO2, the mass ratio is 1:2. These ratios are small whole numbers, illustrating the law of multiple proportions.

Example Illustration
- CuO (copper oxide): 1 atom of copper combines with 1 atom of oxygen
- CuO2 (copper dioxide): 1 atom of copper combines with 2 atoms of oxygen
Therefore, the pair CuO and CuO2 illustrates the law of multiple proportions as the masses of copper that combine with a fixed mass of oxygen are in ratios of small whole numbers.
