In which of the following molecules hydrogen is more acidic?a)Acetylen...
Acidity of Hydrogen in Different Molecules
Acidity of hydrogen in a molecule depends on the stability of the anion formed after the dissociation of the hydrogen ion (H+). The greater the stability of the anion, the greater will be the acidity of hydrogen in the molecule. Let us analyze the acidity of hydrogen in the given molecules.
a) Acetylene (HC≡CH)
Acetylene contains a triple bond between two carbon atoms. Due to the presence of a highly electronegative carbon atom, the electrons of the hydrogen atom are attracted towards it, making the hydrogen atom more acidic. The anion formed after the dissociation of the hydrogen ion is a highly stable acetylide anion (C≡C^-), which contributes to the acidity of hydrogen in acetylene.
b) Methane (CH4)
Methane contains a single bond between a carbon atom and four hydrogen atoms. The electronegativity of carbon is lower than that of hydrogen, and hence, the electrons of the hydrogen atoms are not attracted towards carbon. Therefore, the hydrogen atom in methane is not acidic.
c) Ethane (C2H6)
Ethane contains a single bond between two carbon atoms and six hydrogen atoms. The electronegativity of carbon is lower than that of hydrogen, and hence, the electrons of the hydrogen atoms are not attracted towards carbon. Therefore, the hydrogen atom in ethane is not acidic.
d) Ethylene (C2H4)
Ethylene contains a double bond between two carbon atoms. Due to the presence of a highly electronegative carbon atom, the electrons of the hydrogen atom are attracted towards it, making the hydrogen atom acidic. However, the anion formed after the dissociation of the hydrogen ion is not very stable, and hence, the acidity of hydrogen in ethylene is lower than that in acetylene.
Conclusion:
The correct answer is option 'A' as the hydrogen in acetylene is more acidic than that in methane, ethane, and ethylene due to the presence of a highly stable acetylide anion after the dissociation of the hydrogen ion.
