Dispersion of light causes the blue color of the clear sky

When sunlight enters the Earth's atmosphere, it gets scattered in all directions by the tiny molecules of air and other particles present in the atmosphere. This process of scattering is known as Rayleigh scattering.

Why is the sky blue?

Out of all the colors of the spectrum, blue light has the shortest wavelength and is scattered the most by the molecules in the atmosphere. This scattered blue light is then transmitted in all directions and reaches our eyes, making the clear sky appear blue.

Why is the color of the sky different at sunrise and sunset?

At sunrise and sunset, the light from the sun has to travel through a greater distance of the atmosphere to reach our eyes. During this time, most of the blue light is scattered away by the molecules in the atmosphere, leaving behind the longer wavelengths of light such as red and orange. This is why the sky appears reddish or orange during these times.

Conclusion

Thus, the blue color of the clear sky is due to the phenomenon of dispersion of light, where blue light is scattered the most by the molecules in the atmosphere.
