Formation of the National Assembly in France

The formation of the National Assembly in France was a significant event that marked the beginning of the French Revolution. This assembly was formed as a response to the growing economic and social crisis that was affecting the country. There are several events that led to the formation of the National Assembly, and some of them are highlighted below.

The Estates-General

In the 18th century, France was divided into three estates, which were the clergy, the nobility, and the commoners. The Estates-General was an assembly that included representatives from each of these three estates. It was called by King Louis XVI to address the country's financial crisis, which was largely caused by the country's involvement in the American Revolution.

The Third Estate's Grievances

The Third Estate, which represented the commoners, had the largest population but the least representation in the Estates-General. They felt that their grievances were not being addressed, and they began to demand more representation. They also questioned the voting system, which favored the first two estates.

The Tennis Court Oath

The Third Estate, frustrated with their lack of representation, decided to break away from the Estates-General and form their own assembly. They declared themselves the National Assembly and took the famous Tennis Court Oath, in which they swore not to disband until they had created a new constitution for France.

The Storming of the Bastille

The storming of the Bastille was a symbolic event that marked the beginning of the French Revolution. The Bastille was a prison that represented the tyranny of the monarchy. The people of France, inspired by the National Assembly, stormed the Bastille and released the prisoners. This event showed the power of the people and their determination to bring about change.

Conclusion

The formation of the National Assembly in France was a significant event that marked the beginning of the French Revolution. It was a response to the growing economic and social crisis that was affecting the country. The Third Estate's grievances and the storming of the Bastille were some of the events that led to the formation of the National Assembly.

explain the event that led to the formation of the national assembly
The national assembly was formed on June 20, 1789, by representatives of the third estate. To raise new taxes Louis XVI had convened the estate general on May 5 1789 at Versailles. There had been no such meeting since 1614. All the three Estates were represented. Voting was to be conducted on the old principle- each estate having one vote. The third estate represented by its 600educated and prosperous members demanded voting be conducted by the assembly as a whole where each member would have one vote. Louis XVI's rejection of the proposal led to a walkout by the third estate. The representatives regarded themselves as spokesmen for the whole of France. On 20 June 1789, in the hall of the tennis court, members of the third estate declared themselves theNational Assembly and swore not to disperse till they had drafted a constitution for France that would limit the powers of the monarch.
