If a 3-phase alternator is short-circuited at its terminal, then the current in all three phases will become very high (15 times of the full load current). The reactance will become least and this is called sub transient reactance.

Short-Circuit Current in a 3-Phase Alternator

When a 3-phase alternator is short-circuited at its terminal, a large amount of current flows through the winding. This short-circuit current is mainly dependent on the following factors:

1. Synchronous Reactance (Xs)
Synchronous reactance is the measure of opposition offered by the alternator winding to the flow of current. It is the imaginary part of the synchronous impedance. However, synchronous reactance only plays a minor role in limiting the initial value of short-circuit current.

2. Transient Reactance (Xd)
Transient reactance is the measure of opposition offered by the alternator winding to the flow of current during the transient state. This transient state is the time interval between the occurrence of the fault and the establishment of the steady-state. Transient reactance mainly limits the initial value of short-circuit current.

3. Sub-Transient Reactance (X"d)
Sub-transient reactance is the measure of opposition offered by the alternator winding to the flow of current during the sub-transient state. This sub-transient state is the time interval immediately after the occurrence of the fault. Sub-transient reactance plays a minor role in limiting the initial value of short-circuit current.

Conclusion
Hence, we can conclude that the initial value of short-circuit current in a 3-phase alternator is mainly limited by the transient reactance (Xd).
