The katas, mundas and bandhas were the main irrigation sources in the ancient tribal kingdom of the Gonds (now in Orissa and Madhya Pradesh). Most of these katas were built by the village headmen known as gountias, who in turn, received the land from the Gond kings. Land here is classified into four groups on the basis of its topography: aat, (highland); mal (sloped land); berna (medium land); and bahal (low land).
A kata is constructed north to south, or east to west, of a village. A strong earthen embankment, curved at either end, is built across a drainage line to hold up an irregularly-shaped sheet of water. The undulations of the country usually determine its shape as that of a long isosceles triangle, of which the dam forms the base. It commands a valley, the bottom of which is the bahal land and the sides are the mal terrace.

Introduction:
Katas is an ancient method of water harvesting that is primarily found in Madhya Pradesh. This traditional technique has been used for centuries by communities in the region to collect and store rainwater for various purposes.

Explanation:
Katas refers to a system of underground water storage structures that are designed to capture and store rainwater. These structures are typically made by carving out the earth to create a series of interconnected channels and reservoirs. The water is then stored in these reservoirs, which can be used for irrigation, drinking water, and other domestic purposes.

Location:
Katas is mainly found in the state of Madhya Pradesh, which is located in central India. Madhya Pradesh experiences both monsoon and dry seasons, making water scarcity a significant issue in the region. The people of Madhya Pradesh have developed this ingenious method of water harvesting to ensure a sustainable water supply throughout the year.

Advantages of Katas:
- Efficient Water Storage: Katas structures have a large storage capacity, allowing them to collect and store a significant amount of rainwater. This ensures a reliable water supply during the dry seasons when rainfall is scarce.
- Groundwater Recharge: The water stored in Katas structures also helps in recharging the groundwater table. This is beneficial for maintaining the water levels in wells and boreholes, which are crucial sources of water for rural communities.
- Prevents Soil Erosion: By capturing rainwater and channeling it into the underground storage structures, Katas helps prevent soil erosion caused by surface runoff. This helps in preserving the fertility of agricultural land.
- Sustainable Solution: Katas is a sustainable water harvesting technique that relies on natural processes. It does not require any external energy inputs, making it cost-effective and environmentally friendly.

Conclusion:
Katas is an ancient method of water harvesting primarily found in Madhya Pradesh. This traditional technique has been used for centuries to collect and store rainwater, providing a sustainable water supply for various purposes. The advantages of Katas include efficient water storage, groundwater recharge, prevention of soil erosion, and its sustainable nature. This traditional practice showcases the ingenuity and resourcefulness of the communities in Madhya Pradesh in managing their water resources.
