Solution:
The weight of a body at a point inside the earth is given by the formula:
W = (GMm)/r^2
where,
W = weight of the body
G = gravitational constant
M = mass of the earth
m = mass of the body
r = distance from the center of the earth
Given,
Weight of the body on the surface of the earth, W1 = 200 N
To find,
Weight of the body halfway down to the center of the earth, W2
Let,
r1 = radius of the earth = 6400 km
r2 = distance halfway down to the center of earth = 3200 km
Using the formula, we get:
W1/W2 = (r2/r1)^2
W2 = W1 * (r1/r2)^2
W2 = 200 * (6400/3200)^2
W2 = 100 N
Therefore, the weight of the body halfway down to the center of the earth is 100 N.
