India is a democratic country with a federal system of government. It is divided into twenty-nine states and seven union territories.


States



  • India has twenty-nine states, each with its own elected government and chief minister.

  • The states are further divided into districts, which are governed by a district collector.

  • The largest state in India is Rajasthan, while the smallest is Goa.

  • The states have their own legislature, judiciary, and executive branches of government.

  • Some of the major states in India include Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar, West Bengal, and Andhra Pradesh.



Union Territories



  • India has seven union territories, which are directly governed by the federal government.

  • The union territories are administered by an administrator appointed by the President of India.

  • The union territories do not have their own elected governments, but some have legislative assemblies with limited powers.

  • The largest union territory in India is Andaman and Nicobar Islands, while the smallest is Lakshadweep.

  • The seven union territories of India are Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Chandigarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, Lakshadweep, Delhi, Puducherry, and Jammu and Kashmir.
