State the main features of democracy
Main Features of Democracy

  • Power to the People: In a democratic system, the power to make decisions and govern lies with the people. Citizens have the right to choose their leaders, participate in the decision-making process, and hold their representatives accountable.

  • Fair and Free Elections: Elections are a cornerstone of democracy. Free and fair elections give citizens the opportunity to vote for their preferred candidates and hold their leaders accountable.

  • Rule of Law: Democracy is built on the principle of the rule of law, which means that everyone is subject to the same laws and regulations, regardless of their status or position in society.

  • Protection of Individual Rights: Individual rights are protected in a democratic system. This includes the right to free speech, assembly, religion, and press. Additionally, people have the right to due process and equal protection under the law.

  • Checks and Balances: Democracy relies on a system of checks and balances to prevent any one branch of government from becoming too powerful. This includes the separation of powers between the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of government.

  • Civilian Control of the Military: In a democratic system, the military is under civilian control. This means that elected officials, not the military, make decisions about national security and defense.

  • Transparency and Accountability: Democracy requires transparency and accountability from its leaders. This means that elected officials must be open and honest about their actions and decisions, and they must be held accountable for any wrongdoing.

  • Civil Society: Civil society is a critical component of democracy. This includes organizations such as non-profits, community groups, and media outlets that provide a voice for citizens and hold leaders accountable.

  • Majority Rule with Minority Rights: In a democratic system, the majority rules, but this does not mean that the rights of minorities are ignored or trampled upon. Minority rights are protected, and the voices of minority groups are heard and respected.
