Reason for raising the Free Indian Legion:
Subhash Chandra Bose believed that India's freedom could only be achieved through armed struggle. He wanted to build an army that would fight alongside the Axis powers against the British.
Formation of the Free Indian Legion:
In 1941, Subhash Chandra Bose went to Germany to seek help in his fight against the British. He met with Adolf Hitler and convinced him to support India's independence movement. Hitler agreed, and the Free Indian Legion was formed. It was made up of Indian prisoners of war who were captured by the Germans during their campaign in North Africa.
Role of the Free Indian Legion:
The Free Indian Legion was sent to fight in the Soviet Union. However, they were not successful and suffered heavy losses. Later, the Legion was sent to fight in Italy and was merged with the Italian Army.
Legacy of the Free Indian Legion:
The Free Indian Legion did not play a significant role in India's fight for freedom. However, it did highlight the fact that Indians were willing to fight and die for their country's independence. The formation of the Legion also brought attention to the Indian freedom struggle on the international stage.
