According to Carnot, a French engineer and physicist, there is an idealized maximum efficiency for any heat engine, known as the Carnot efficiency. The Carnot efficiency is determined by the temperature difference between the hot and cold reservoirs of the engine. It is given by the equation:

Efficiency = 1 - (Tcold/Thot)

where Tcold is the temperature of the cold reservoir and Thot is the temperature of the hot reservoir.

Carnot's work laid the foundation for the development of thermodynamics and the understanding of the limits of heat engine efficiency. He established that no heat engine can have an efficiency higher than the Carnot efficiency when operating between two given temperature reservoirs.
