-A Frenkel defect is a type of point defect in crystalline solids, named after its discoverer Yakov Frenkel. The defect forms when an atom or smaller ion leaves its place in the lattice, creating a vacancy, and becomes an interstitial by lodging in a nearby location.
-Frenkel defects is the defect in which one of the ions leaves its lattice position and moves into an interstitial void, creating a vacancy at the lattice point. Since the ion is dislocated from its lattice site, the Frenkel defect is also known as dislocation defect.
-The effective positive charge of the Cl− vacancy traps the electron released by the Na atom. This trapping of the electrons by anion vacancies results in the formation of F-centers; that is, the electrons released in this process diffuse to the vacant sites where negatively charged ions (i.e., anions) normally reside.
