The site of gaseous exchange in the respiratory system is the alveoli
The alveoli are tiny air sacs located at the end of the bronchioles in the lungs. They are the site where oxygen from the air we breathe enters the bloodstream and carbon dioxide is removed from the bloodstream and exhaled out of the body.
Function of alveoli in gaseous exchange
- Alveoli are surrounded by a network of tiny blood vessels called capillaries.
- Oxygen from the inhaled air diffuses through the walls of the alveoli and into the capillaries, where it binds to red blood cells.
- At the same time, carbon dioxide from the blood diffuses into the alveoli to be exhaled out of the body.
Importance of alveoli in the respiratory system
- The alveoli's large surface area allows for efficient exchange of gases between the lungs and the bloodstream.
