PH and Hemoglobin Binding Efficiency

Hemoglobin is a protein present in red blood cells that is responsible for transporting oxygen from the lungs to the body tissues. The efficiency of hemoglobin to bind with oxygen is affected by the pH of the blood.

Effect of pH on Hemoglobin Binding Efficiency

- Hemoglobin has four subunits, each containing an iron ion that can bind with one oxygen molecule. When the pH of the blood is low, the affinity of hemoglobin for oxygen decreases, and it releases oxygen more readily. This effect is known as the Bohr effect.
- When the pH of the blood is high, the affinity of hemoglobin for oxygen increases, and it binds with oxygen more tightly. This effect is known as the Haldane effect.

Maximum O2 Binding Efficiency of Hemoglobin

- The pH of the blood is normally around 7.4, which is slightly alkaline. At this pH, the binding efficiency of hemoglobin with oxygen is maximum.
- At a lower pH, such as 6.8, the binding efficiency of hemoglobin with oxygen decreases because of the Bohr effect.
- At a higher pH, such as 7.8, the binding efficiency of hemoglobin with oxygen also decreases because of the Haldane effect.

Conclusion

Therefore, the correct answer to the given question is option 'D' (7.4), as the binding efficiency of hemoglobin with oxygen is maximum at this pH.
