The transmission coefficient of a wave propagating in the Brewster angle is
  • a)
    0
  • b)
    1
  • c)
    -1
  • d)
    Infinity
Correct answer is option 'B'. Can you explain this answer?
Verified Answer
The transmission coefficient of a wave propagating in the Brewster ang...
Answer: b
Explanation: The transmission coefficient is the reverse of the reflection coefficient. At Brewster angle, the reflection will be zero. Thus the transmission is T = 1-R. Since R = 0, T = 1. It is to be noted that T and R lies in the range of 0 to 1.

Brewster angle

The Brewster angle is the angle of incidence at which light with a particular polarization is perfectly transmitted through a transparent dielectric surface, with no reflection. It is named after the Scottish physicist Sir David Brewster.

Transmission coefficient

The transmission coefficient is the ratio of the intensity of the transmitted wave to the intensity of the incident wave. It is a measure of how much of the wave is transmitted through a medium.

Answer explanation

At the Brewster angle, the incident wave is polarized in such a way that the reflected wave is completely polarized perpendicular to the incident wave. This means that the transmitted wave is perfectly polarized parallel to the incident wave, and there is no reflected wave.

Since there is no reflection, the intensity of the transmitted wave is equal to the intensity of the incident wave. Therefore, the transmission coefficient is equal to 1.

Hence, option 'B' is the correct answer.
