The load on each axle of a locomotive is 22 tonnes. If the coefficient...
Given: Load on each axle of locomotive = 22 tonnes, Coefficient of friction = 0.2, Number of pairs of driving wheels = 3

To find: Hauling capacity

Solution:

1. Calculation of Normal force on each wheel

- Weight on each axle = 22 tonnes
- Total weight on 3 axles = 3 x 22 = 66 tonnes
- Normal force on each wheel = Weight on each axle / Number of wheels on each axle
- Normal force on each wheel = 22 / 2 = 11 tonnes

2. Calculation of Tractive force

- Tractive force = Normal force x Coefficient of friction
- Tractive force = 11 x 0.2 = 2.2 tonnes

3. Calculation of Hauling capacity

- Hauling capacity = Tractive force x Number of driving wheels
- Hauling capacity = 2.2 x 6 = 13.2 tonnes

Therefore, the hauling capacity due to 3 pairs of driving wheels is 13.2 tonnes (Option C).
