Genetic Equilibrium

The Hardy-Weinberg principle states that in a large, randomly mating population with no mutation, migration, or selection, the frequencies of alleles and genotypes will remain constant from generation to generation. This is known as genetic equilibrium.

Autosomal Recessive Trait

An autosomal recessive trait is a trait that is expressed only when an individual is homozygous for the recessive allele. In this case, individuals with the dominant allele will not show the trait.

Calculating Allele Frequencies

In this population, the frequency of the recessive allele can be calculated using the following formula:
q^2 + 2pq + p^2 = 1
where q is the frequency of the recessive allele and p is the frequency of the dominant allele.

Given that 4 individuals show the trait, it can be assumed that they are homozygous recessive. Therefore:
q^2 = 4/100
q = 0.2

Substituting q into the equation:
p = 1 - q
p = 1 - 0.2
p = 0.8

Therefore, the frequency of the dominant allele is 0.8.
