Yugoslavia in the 1990s. The breakup of the socialist federation led to a series of violent conflicts, including the Croatian War of Independence (1991-1995), the Bosnian War (1992-1995), and the Kosovo War (1998-1999). These conflicts resulted in widespread ethnic cleansing, massacres, and displacement of populations, leading to an estimated 140,000 deaths and millions of refugees. The international community intervened with military forces and diplomatic efforts to bring an end to the conflicts, ultimately leading to the establishment of independent states such as Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Kosovo.
