Heat Loss Calculation from an Aluminum Rod

Given Parameters:
- Diameter of aluminum rod = 2 cm
- Length of aluminum rod = 20 cm
- Wall temperature = 300°C
- Air temperature = 30°C
- Heat transfer coefficient between rod surface and air = 10 W/m²K
- Distance of interest from wall = 10 cm

Calculating Heat Transfer Coefficient:
The heat transfer coefficient between the surface of the aluminum rod and air can be calculated using the formula:

h = k / L

where,
h = Heat transfer coefficient (W/m²K)
k = Thermal conductivity of aluminum (237 W/mK)
L = Characteristic length (Diameter of aluminum rod) = 0.02 m

Therefore,
h = 237 / 0.02 = 11850 W/m²K

Calculating Heat Loss:
The heat loss from the aluminum rod can be calculated using the formula:

Q = h * A * ΔT

where,
Q = Heat loss (W)
A = Surface area of aluminum rod (m²)
ΔT = Temperature difference between rod surface and air (K)

Surface area of aluminum rod can be calculated using the formula:

A = π * D * L

where,
π = 3.14
D = Diameter of aluminum rod = 0.02 m
L = Length of aluminum rod = 0.2 m

Therefore,
A = 3.14 * 0.02 * 0.2 = 0.01256 m²

Temperature difference between rod surface and air at a distance of 10 cm from the wall can be calculated using the formula:

ΔT = (Tw - Ta) / ln (Rw / Ra)

where,
Tw = Wall temperature = 300°C = 573K
Ta = Air temperature = 30°C = 303K
Rw = Distance of rod surface from wall = 0.02 m
Ra = Distance of rod surface from air = 0.1 m

Therefore,
ΔT = (573 - 303) / ln (0.02 / 0.1) = 77.03K

Substituting the values in the formula for heat loss, we get:

Q = 11850 * 0.01256 * 77.03 = 114.9 W

Therefore, the heat loss by the temperature of the aluminum rod at a distance of 10 cm from the wall is 114.9 W.
