Explanation:

The sodium fusion test is a qualitative test used for detecting the presence of nitrogen, sulphur and halogens in an organic compound. In this test, a small amount of the organic compound is fused with metallic sodium in a clean, dry test tube. The resulting mass is then extracted with water and the aqueous solution is tested for the presence of the above elements.

Conversion of Nitrogen:

When an organic compound containing nitrogen is fused with metallic sodium, the nitrogen of the organic compound gets converted into sodium cyanide. This is because, during the fusion, the nitrogen of the organic compound reacts with the metallic sodium to form sodamide (NaNH2), which further reacts with the remaining sodium to form sodium cyanide (NaCN).

Reaction:

R-NH2 + 2 Na → R-Na + NaNH2

NaNH2 + Na → NaNH2

NaNH2 + C → NaCN + NaH

Therefore, the formation of sodium cyanide confirms the presence of nitrogen in the organic compound.
