Respiration in Humans

Respiration is a process by which cells of the body obtain energy from glucose by breaking it down in the presence of oxygen. It can be divided into two types: external respiration and internal respiration.

External Respiration

  • Air enters the body through the nose or mouth and passes through the pharynx and larynx.

  • It then travels down the trachea, which branches into two bronchi, one leading to each lung.

  • Inside the lungs, the bronchi divide into smaller bronchioles and finally into tiny air sacs called alveoli.

  • Oxygen from the air diffuses across the walls of the alveoli and into the bloodstream.

  • At the same time, carbon dioxide from the bloodstream diffuses across the walls of the alveoli and enters the air in the lungs.

  • The carbon dioxide is then exhaled out of the body.

Internal Respiration

  • The oxygen-rich blood from the lungs is carried by the pulmonary vein to the left atrium of the heart.

  • From the left atrium, the blood is pumped into the left ventricle and then out through the aorta to the rest of the body.

  • The oxygen is then used by the cells of the body to produce energy through a process called cellular respiration.

  • During cellular respiration, glucose is broken down in the presence of oxygen to produce carbon dioxide, water, and energy in the form of ATP.

  • The carbon dioxide produced by cellular respiration is carried by the blood back to the lungs to be exhaled.

Summary

Respiration is a continuous process that involves both external and internal respiration. External respiration involves the exchange of gases between the air in the lungs and the bloodstream, while internal respiration involves the use of oxygen by the cells of the body to produce energy through cellular respiration. The carbon dioxide produced during cellular respiration is carried by the blood back to the lungs to be exhaled.
