Respiratory System in Human Beings


The respiratory system in human beings involves the intake of oxygen and the release of carbon dioxide. It is a complex process that involves several organs and systems working together to ensure proper breathing and gas exchange.


Nasal Cavity


  • The process of respiration begins with the inhalation of air through the nostrils.

Pharynx and Larynx


  • From the nasal cavity, the air moves into the pharynx, which is the junction of the respiratory and digestive systems.

  • The vocal cords vibrate as air passes through them, producing sound.



Trachea and Bronchi


  • The air then passes through the trachea, which is a tube that connects the larynx to the bronchi.

  • The trachea is lined with cilia, which help to move mucus and other debris out of the respiratory system.

  • The trachea then branches into two bronchi, which lead to the lungs.



Lungs and Alveoli


  • The lungs are the main organs of respiration.

  • Each lung is divided into lobes and contains millions of tiny air sacs called alveoli.

  • The alveoli are surrounded by capillaries, and it is here that gas exchange occurs.

  • Oxygen from the air enters the bloodstream through the capillaries, while carbon dioxide from the bloodstream enters the alveoli to be exhaled.



Diaphragm


  • The diaphragm is a muscle located at the base of the lungs.

  • It plays a crucial role in breathing.

  • When the diaphragm contracts, it moves downward, increasing the volume of the chest cavity and causing air to be drawn into the lungs.

  • When the diaphragm relaxes, it moves upward, decreasing the volume of the chest cavity and causing air to be expelled from the lungs.
