work = surface tension × change in area
Since the final area is less as compared to the initial area of many drops so the work done is negative which implies that the energy is released....

similarly if a large drop breaks in smaller as in body sprays, perfumes, atomiser the final area of n drops is more that the initial area of single drop hence work is +ve which means that the energy is absorbed .. you have used the body sparys or perfumes when you sprayed it you must have the container become cold because large drop absorbed the heat and changes to smaller drop hence container feels cold....
