Being a beginner, would it be wise to straight away start reading NCERTs and then analyse PYQs, or first analyse them and then move on to the studying part? (I've seen the questions of 2015 prelims, but being completely unaware I was just able to solve just 2 questions.. And also, I couldn't quite make out the pattern..) So, what should be the right approach?

Approach for a beginner in UPSC preparation

When it comes to preparing for the UPSC exam as a beginner, it is important to have a clear plan in place. Here is an approach that can be followed:

1. Understand the exam pattern
Before starting the preparation, it is important to have a clear understanding of the exam pattern. This will help in knowing what to expect and how to prepare accordingly.

2. Start with NCERTs
NCERTs are considered the best books for building a strong foundation in the subjects required for the UPSC exam. As a beginner, it is recommended to start with NCERTs as they are easy to understand and provide a basic understanding of the subject.

3. Analyze Previous Year Question Papers
Once the basics are covered, it is important to analyze the previous year question papers to understand the pattern and type of questions asked. This will help in identifying the important topics and areas that need more attention.

4. Create a Study Plan
After analyzing the previous year question papers, create a study plan that covers all the important topics and areas. The plan should be realistic and achievable, with enough time for revision.

5. Practice Mock Tests
Mock tests are a great way to test the knowledge and understanding of the subject. Practice as many mock tests as possible to get an idea of the exam pattern and to improve time management skills.

6. Stay Updated
Keeping oneself updated with the current affairs is essential for the UPSC exam. Stay updated with the latest news and events by reading newspapers, magazines, and watching news channels.

In conclusion, as a beginner, it is important to start with the basics and gradually build upon the knowledge. Analyzing previous year question papers and practicing mock tests are equally important in the preparation process. Creating a study plan and staying updated with current affairs will help in achieving success in the UPSC exam.

First one should study the content before looking into questions. If you directly jump to the question part, your depth of learning the content after will not be efficient and effective. Maybe you can study contents and can go through topic wise prelims questions simultaneously.
