Physiography of India (Part - 1)

India is a diverse country in terms of physiography. It has six physiographic divisions that can be broadly classified into the following:

1. The Himalayan Mountains
The Himalayan Mountains are the highest mountain range in the world. They run for about 2,500 km from Jammu and Kashmir in the west to Arunachal Pradesh in the east.

2. The Northern Plains
The Northern Plains are located south of the Himalayas and are formed by three major river systems - the Indus, the Ganges, and the Brahmaputra.

3. The Peninsular Plateau
The Peninsular Plateau is a large plateau that covers most of peninsular India. It is bounded by the Western Ghats in the west and the Eastern Ghats in the east.

4. The Indian Desert
The Indian Desert is located in western India and covers parts of Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Haryana. It is a hot and dry region with sparse vegetation.

5. The Coastal Plains
The Coastal Plains are located on either side of the peninsular plateau. The Western Coastal Plains are narrow and run parallel to the Western Ghats, while the Eastern Coastal Plains are wider and run parallel to the Bay of Bengal.

6. The Islands
India has two major island groups - the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in the Bay of Bengal and the Lakshadweep Islands in the Arabian Sea.

In conclusion, India's six physiographic divisions have unique features that make each one of them distinct. The country's diverse physical features have contributed to its rich cultural heritage and biodiversity.
