The Mahajanapadas emerged around the 6th century BCE and continued until the rise of the Mauryan Empire in the 4th century BCE.

Characteristics of Mahajanapadas:
- Expansion of Territories: Mahajanapadas were much larger than Janapadas and encompassed multiple smaller Janapadas within their boundaries.
- Centralized Authority: Unlike Janapadas, Mahajanapadas had a more centralized form of governance with strong monarchies ruling over them.
