With reference to Ashokan Pillar inscriptions, which of the following ...
The inscriptions were deciphered by James Princep
Besides a few inscriptions in Greek and Aramaic (which were discovered only in the 20th century), the Edicts were mostly written in the Brahmi script and sometimes in the Kharoshthi script in the northwest.
They were kept in public places and along trade routes so that maximum number of people would read them. More than religious discourses, they talk about the moral duties of the people, how to conduct life, Ashoka’s desire to be a good and benevolent ruler, and about Ashoka’s work towards this end.
The Kandahar Rock Inscription is bilingual Greek-Aramaic. The Kandahar Greek Edict of Ashoka is in Greek only, and originally probably contained all the Major Rock Edicts 1-14.

Ashokan Pillar Inscriptions

The Ashokan Pillar Inscriptions are a collection of inscriptions found on pillars and boulders across India and neighbouring regions. These inscriptions were commissioned by Emperor Ashoka, who ruled the Mauryan Empire from 268 to 232 BCE. The Ashokan Pillar Inscriptions are considered to be one of the most important sources of information about Ashoka's reign.

Decipherment

1. The inscriptions were deciphered by John Princep

John Princep was a British scholar who deciphered the Brahmi script, which was used to write the Ashokan Pillar Inscriptions. In 1837, he published a paper in the Journal of the Asiatic Society of Bengal, in which he explained the method he used to decipher the script. This was a significant breakthrough, as it allowed scholars to read and understand the inscriptions for the first time.

Script

2. In eastern India, the script found was Kharoshthi script

Kharoshthi script was used to write the Ashokan inscriptions in the north-western regions of the Mauryan Empire, including modern-day Afghanistan and Pakistan. However, in eastern India, the script used was Brahmi. Brahmi was an indigenous script that was used to write a variety of languages in ancient India.

Content

3. The inscriptions contained moral and religious precepts of Ashoka

The Ashokan Pillar Inscriptions contain a variety of messages, including Ashoka's moral and religious precepts, his edicts, and his policies. These messages were intended to be read by people across the empire, and they were written in a language and script that could be understood by the majority of the population.

Bilingual Inscription

4. One of the inscriptions found at Kandahar is bilingual

One of the Ashokan Pillar Inscriptions found at Kandahar is bilingual, written in both Greek and Aramaic scripts. This suggests that the Mauryan Empire had diplomatic and trade relations with the Hellenistic kingdoms in the region.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the Ashokan Pillar Inscriptions are an important source of information about Emperor Ashoka and his reign. They were deciphered by John Princep, and they contain a variety of messages written in different scripts.
