Before every ovulation uterus prepares itself with a lot of blood vessels and becomes thick , spongy. This is necessary because if egg get fertilised by the sperm, it has to keep the embryo for nutrition, respiration and excretion.But, if the egg is not fertilised then there is no need of prepared uterus and breaks down .Thus, the breakdown of uterus with blood vessels and coming out as a vaginal fluid is called menstruation. Hence, menstruation occur.

When the ovum remains unfertilized,progesterone secretion starts decreasing. The uterine tissues fail to be maintained and start rupturing. Then the unfertilized ovum along with ruptured uterine epithelium, about 50-100 ml of blood and some mucus is discharged through the vaginal orifice. This vaginal bleeding is called MENSTRUCATION.
