Started facing displacement and marginalization due to British colonial policies and later, independent India's development projects. The Adivasis, who are the indigenous people of the region, have been historically dependent on the forest resources for their livelihoods and cultural practices.
During the British colonial rule, extensive deforestation took place in Jharkhand to extract valuable minerals and establish industrial centers. This led to the displacement of many Adivasis from their ancestral lands and loss of their traditional livelihoods. The British also introduced the zamindari system, which further marginalized the Adivasis by turning them into tenant farmers and laborers.
After India gained independence in 1947, development projects such as dam construction, mining, and industrialization continued to displace Adivasis from their lands. Large-scale infrastructure projects like the construction of the Damodar Valley Corporation in the 1950s and the Koel-Karo dam in the 1970s resulted in massive displacement of Adivasis without adequate compensation or rehabilitation.
Furthermore, the Adivasis faced discrimination and exploitation by the dominant non-tribal communities in the region. Their traditional land rights and cultural practices were often disregarded, leading to loss of identity and social exclusion.
In recent times, the Adivasis from Jharkhand have been at the forefront of various movements and protests demanding their rights and resisting further displacement. They have been demanding the implementation of the Forest Rights Act, 2006, which grants recognition and rights over forest land to the Adivasis and other forest-dwelling communities.
Despite these struggles, the Adivasis from Jharkhand have managed to preserve their rich cultural heritage and maintain their close connection with the land. They continue to fight for their rights, dignity, and self-determination in the face of ongoing challenges.
