Electrolysis of Sodium Chloride Solution

  • In the first step of the process, a concentrated solution of sodium chloride (brine) is fed into an electrolytic cell.
  • The electrolytic cell consists of an anode and a cathode, both immersed in the brine solution.
  • When an electric current is passed through the solution, chloride ions (Cl-) are attracted to the anode, where they are oxidized to form chlorine gas.
  • At the same time, sodium ions (Na+) are attracted to the cathode, where they are reduced to form sodium hydroxide.
