DIRECTIONS for the question: Answer the following question as per the best of your ability.
A boy goes from his house to his school daily by a motorbike. He rides the motorbike at three different speeds, S m/min, 2.5 S m/min and 4S m/min for three different durations during the journey. He knows the time intervals for which he should ride his motorbike at each of these speeds so as to reach the school on time.On one particular day, he started 20 minutes late from his house and rode his motorbike at 2.5S m/min for 6 minutes longer than usual. For how much longer than usual should he ride at 4S m/min so that he reaches school on time?
  • a)
    11/3 minutes
  • b)
    15/4 minutes
  • c)
    14/3 minutes
  • d)
    Cannot be determined
Correct answer is option 'A'. Can you explain this answer?
Verified Answer
DIRECTIONS for the question:Answer the following question as per the b...
Suppose the time for which he rides at S, 2.5S and 4S m/min are T1, T2 and T3 minutes respectively.
The distance between his house and the school is ST1 + 2.5ST2 + 4ST3.
Since he started 30 min late, he has T1 + T2 + T3 - 20 minutes left to reach school.
Suppose the times for which he rode at 2.5S abd 4S m/min are (6 +T2) and (T3 + x) minutes respectively.
The time for which he rode at S m/min is now
T1 - 20 - x - 6 minutes. ⇒ ST1 + 2.5ST+ 4ST3
= S(T1-20 - x -6) + 2.5S(6 + T2) + 4S(T3+x)
Solving this equation gives x = 11/3 minutes.

DIRECTIONS for the question:Answer the following question as per the b...
Analysis:
Let's assume that the boy needs to ride at a speed of S m/min for a duration of T minutes to reach school on time. On one particular day, he started 20 minutes late, so he needs to adjust his riding time accordingly to reach school on time.

Given:
- Starting delay = 20 minutes
- Extra riding time at 2.5S m/min = 6 minutes

Calculating the usual riding time:
Since the boy reaches school on time when he rides at a speed of S m/min for a duration of T minutes, we can calculate the usual riding time as:
Usual riding time = T minutes

Calculating the adjusted riding time:
To adjust for the starting delay, the boy needs to reduce the riding time at a speed of S m/min. Let's assume the adjusted riding time at S m/min is T' minutes.

T' = T - (Starting delay / S) = T - (20 / S)

Since the boy rode his motorbike at 2.5S m/min for 6 minutes longer than usual, the adjusted riding time at 2.5S m/min is T' + 6 minutes.

Adjusted riding time at 2.5S m/min = T' + 6

Calculating the riding time at 4S m/min:
To find the riding time at 4S m/min, we need to determine the difference between the adjusted riding time and the usual riding time at 2.5S m/min.

Riding time at 4S m/min = Adjusted riding time at 2.5S m/min - Usual riding time at 2.5S m/min

Riding time at 4S m/min = (T' + 6) - (T' + 6 - 6) = 6 minutes

Thus, the boy needs to ride at 4S m/min for 6 minutes longer than usual to reach school on time.

Answer:
The boy should ride at 4S m/min for 6 minutes longer than usual to reach school on time.
Therefore, the correct answer is option A) 11/3 minutes.
