The main temple tower called VIMANA is like a stepped pyramid which rises up geometrically rather than curving generally found in south temples. The word Shikhara is used only for the crowning element at the top of the temple called STUPIKA or an octagonal cupola. It is the main feature of Nagara temple. A gopuram or gopura is a monumental entrance tower, usually ornate, at the entrance of a Hindu temple, in the Dravidian architecture of the Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Karnataka, and Telangana states of Southern India.
