Liver is an important gland of the body which performs a variety of functions. In addition to its function in digestion and food storage, the liver participates in excretion. Let's discuss the different functions of the liver in detail.

Deamination and Urea Formation
The liver plays an important role in the removal of excess nitrogen from the body. This is done through a process called deamination, where the liver removes the amino group from amino acids. The liver then converts the amino group into ammonia, which is further converted into urea. Urea is then excreted out of the body through urine. This process is known as urea formation and is an important function of the liver.

Elimination of Haemoglobin and Bile Salts
Another important function of the liver is the elimination of haemoglobin and bile salts. The liver breaks down old and damaged red blood cells and recycles their components. The haemoglobin molecule is broken down into heme and globin. The globin is further broken down into amino acids and recycled while the iron from heme is stored in the liver or transported to the bone marrow for the production of new red blood cells. Bile salts are synthesized in the liver and help in the digestion and absorption of fats. The liver secretes bile salts into the small intestine where they aid in the breakdown of fats.

Inactivation of Chemicals after their Role is Over
The liver also plays a crucial role in the detoxification of the body. It inactivates chemicals after their role is over. The liver converts many toxic substances into less harmful compounds that can be excreted in urine or bile. The liver also detoxifies drugs and alcohol by breaking them down into less harmful substances.

Conclusion
In conclusion, the liver is an important gland of the body that performs a variety of functions. Its role in digestion, food storage, and excretion is crucial for maintaining good health. The liver's functions of deamination, urea formation, elimination of haemoglobin and bile salts, and detoxification make it an essential organ of the body.
