Purification of Aluminium by Electrolytic Refining

Aluminium is purified by electrolytic refining process which is also known as Hoopes process.

Steps involved in Hoopes process:

1. Preparation of anode: The anode used in the electrolytic refining process is made up of impure aluminium which is melted and cast into blocks.

2. Preparation of cathode: The cathode used in this process is a carbon block which serves as the reducing agent.

3. Bath preparation: A mixture of cryolite and aluminium fluoride is used as electrolyte in the process. This mixture melts at a temperature of around 1000-1100 degree Celsius.

4. Electrolysis: The anode and cathode are placed into the electrolyte solution and a direct current is passed through them. The impure aluminium at the anode dissolves into the electrolyte solution and pure aluminium is deposited at the cathode.

5. Collection of pure aluminium: The pure aluminium collected at the cathode is removed periodically and the electrolysis process is continued until the anode is completely consumed.

Advantages of Hoopes process:

1. It is a cost-effective method of purifying aluminium.

2. The process is highly efficient in producing pure aluminium.

3. The process can be easily scaled up for industrial production.

Therefore, the correct answer is option D - Hoopes process.
