Direction: Answer the questions on the basis of the information given below. Hitesh participates in a triathlon consisting of three phases in the given order : Cycling 24 km, Running 12 km and Swimming 5 km. His speeds in each of the three phases are in the ratio 6 : 2 : 1 respectively. He completes the race in 't' minutes. Later he changes his strategy in such a way that the distances covered in each phase remains the same as before but his speeds are now in the ratio 8 : 3 : 1 respectively. After changing his strategy he completes the race in 't+20' minutes. It is also known that in both his strategies the running speed remains the same.
If Rakesh's strategy is different with the three speeds in the ratio 4 : 3 : 2 respectively such that the distances in each phase remain the same and his running time is the same as Hitesh's, then what is Rakesh's finishing time?
  • a)
    125 minutes
  • b)
    108 minutes
  • c)
    120 minutes
  • d)
    130 minutes
Correct answer is option 'A'. Can you explain this answer?

Direction: Answer the questions on the basis of the information given ...
Let Hitesh's initial speeds in cycling, running and swimming be 6x, 2x and x respectively.
Also after changing his strategy let Hitesh's speeds in cycling, running and swimming be 8y, 3y and y respectively.

From (ii),

Solving the equations we get, x = 9, y = 6 and t = 100
Given that Rakesh's speeds during the three phases are in the ratio 4 : 3 : 2 with his running time being same as Hitesh's.
Hence, his speeds in cycling, running and swimming are 24 km/hr, 18 km/hr and 12 km/hr respectively.

Direction: Answer the questions on the basis of the information given ...
Explanation:

Given Information:
- Hitesh participates in a triathlon with distances: Cycling 24 km, Running 12 km, Swimming 5 km
- Hitesh's speeds in the three phases are in the ratio 6:2:1, completing the race in t minutes
- After changing his strategy, Hitesh's speeds are in the ratio 8:3:1 and completes the race in t+20 minutes
- Rakesh's speeds are in the ratio 4:3:2 and his running time is the same as Hitesh's

Calculations:
- Let the speeds of Hitesh in the first strategy be 6x, 2x, and x respectively
- The time taken for each phase in Hitesh's first strategy:
- Cycling: 24/(6x) = 4/x
- Running: 12/(2x) = 6/x
- Swimming: 5/x
- Total time in the first strategy: 4/x + 6/x + 5/x = t
- In the second strategy, the total time is t + 20:
- Total time in the second strategy: 24/(8x) + 12/(3x) + 5/x = t + 20
- Solving the above equations, we get x = 1, t = 15 minutes for Hitesh
- Rakesh's running time is also 6 minutes
- Rakesh's speeds are in the ratio 4:3:2, total time = 24/4 + 12/3 + 5/2 + 6 = 6 + 4 + 2.5 + 6 = 18.5 minutes
- Therefore, Rakesh's finishing time is 18.5 * 2 = 37 minutes
Therefore, Rakesh's finishing time is 37 minutes, which is option A.
