Direction: Answer the questions on the basis of the information given below. Hitesh participates in a triathlon consisting of three phases in the given order : Cycling 24 km, Running 12 km and Swimming 5 km. His speeds in each of the three phases are in the ratio 6 : 2 : 1 respectively. He completes the race in 't' minutes. Later he changes his strategy in such a way that the distances covered in each phase remains the same as before but his speeds are now in the ratio 8 : 3 : 1 respectively. After changing his strategy he completes the race in 't+20' minutes. It is also known that in both his strategies the running speed remains the same.
If Hitesh's Swimming speed in his initial strategy had been 1 km/hr more, then how much time would he take to cover the same distance?
  • a)
    32 minutes
  • b)
    18 minutes
  • c)
    30 minutes
  • d)
    40 minutes
Correct answer is option 'C'. Can you explain this answer?

Direction: Answer the questions on the basis of the information given ...
Let Hitesh's initial speeds in cycling, running and swimming be 6x, 2x and x respectively.
Also after changing his strategy let Hitesh's speeds in cycling, running and swimming be 8y, 3y and y respectively.

From (ii),

Solving the equations we get, x = 9, y = 6 and t = 100

Direction: Answer the questions on the basis of the information given ...
Given information:
Hitesh participates in a triathlon consisting of three phases: Cycling 24 km, Running 12 km, and Swimming 5 km.
His speeds in each phase are in the ratio 6:2:1 respectively.
He completes the race in t minutes.
He changes his strategy such that the distances covered in each phase remain the same, but his speeds are now in the ratio 8:3:1 respectively.
After changing his strategy, he completes the race in t+20 minutes.
The running speed remains the same in both strategies.

To find:
If Hitesh's swimming speed in his initial strategy had been 1 km/hr more, then how much time would he take to cover the same distance?

Solution:

Step 1: Calculate the speeds for each phase in the initial strategy:
Let the speeds for Cycling, Running, and Swimming in the initial strategy be 6x, 2x, and x km/hr respectively.
Therefore, the time taken for each phase is as follows:
Time taken for Cycling = Distance/Speed = 24/6x = 4/x
Time taken for Running = 12/2x = 6/x
Time taken for Swimming = 5/x

Step 2: Calculate the time taken in the initial strategy:
Total time taken in the initial strategy = Time taken for Cycling + Time taken for Running + Time taken for Swimming
= 4/x + 6/x + 5/x = (4+6+5)/x = 15/x
Given that the total time taken in the initial strategy is t minutes. Therefore, we have:
15/x = t
=> x = 15/t

Step 3: Calculate the speeds for each phase in the changed strategy:
Let the speeds for Cycling, Running, and Swimming in the changed strategy be 8y, 3y, and y km/hr respectively.

Step 4: Calculate the time taken in the changed strategy:
Total time taken in the changed strategy = Time taken for Cycling + Time taken for Running + Time taken for Swimming
= 24/8y + 12/3y + 5/y
= (3+4+5)/y = 12/y
Given that the total time taken in the changed strategy is (t+20) minutes. Therefore, we have:
12/y = t+20
=> y = 12/(t+20)

Step 5: Calculate the time taken in the new strategy with increased swimming speed:
If Hitesh's swimming speed in the initial strategy had been 1 km/hr more, then the speed would be (x+1) km/hr.
The time taken for Swimming in the new strategy = 5/(x+1)
The time taken for Cycling and Running remain the same.
Therefore, the total time taken in the new strategy = 4/x + 6/x + 5/(x+1)
= (4+6+5(x+1))/x(x+1) = (15x+15)/x(x+1)

Step 6: Calculate the time taken:
We need to find the value of (15x+15)/x(x+1)
Substitute the value of x from Step 2:
[(15
