Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2016 - Countries covered

Under the Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2016, Indian citizenship was proposed to be granted to illegal migrants from certain minority communities from the following countries:

1. Afghanistan
2. Bangladesh
4. Pakistan

Explanation:

The Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2016 sought to amend the Citizenship Act, 1955 to grant Indian citizenship to illegal migrants from certain minority communities - Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis, and Christians - from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Pakistan. These communities were said to be facing religious persecution in these countries.

The bill lapsed in 2019 with the dissolution of the 16th Lok Sabha. However, a similar bill was introduced in the 17th Lok Sabha in December 2019 and was later passed by both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha in December 2019 and January 2020, respectively. The Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019 (CAA) grants Indian citizenship to illegal migrants from these communities who entered India on or before December 31, 2014. The act has sparked protests and controversy across the country.
