Solution:

Given, total number of students = 1800

Let the number of boys be ‘B’ and number of girls be ‘G’

So, B + G = 1800 ………(1)

Also, 65% of boys and 80% of girls passed the exam.

So, number of boys passed = 65% of B = 0.65B

Number of girls passed = 80% of G = 0.8G

Total number of students passed = 75% of 1800 = 0.75 × 1800 = 1350

Therefore, 0.65B + 0.8G = 1350 ………(2)

On solving equations (1) and (2), we get

B = 600 and G = 1200

Therefore, number of girls appeared in the exam = G = 1200

Number of girls failed = Total number of girls – Number of girls passed

= 1200 – (0.8 × 1200)

= 240

Therefore, the correct option is B) 1200, 240
