See ...it's a closed cube only and not a solid one that u should worry about it's volume.....so how many surfaces does a cube has= 6....so 6( a×a ) = 12×8
i.e. a×a = 16= 4×4 or a=4

Six boxes A, B, C, D, E and F have been painted with six different col...
Problem:
A piece of tin in the form of a rectangle having length 12 cm and width 8 cm. This is used to construct a closed cube. The side of the cube is:
a) 2 cm
b) 3 cm
c) 4 cm
d) 7 cm

Solution:
To form a cube from a rectangular piece of tin, we need to cut out six equal squares of side 'a' from the corners of the rectangle. This will leave us with four flaps of length 'a' and width '8 - 2a' and two flaps of length 'a' and width '12 - 2a'. We can then fold these flaps to form a cube.

Let's assume the side of the cube is 'a' cm. Then we have:

- Length of the tin = sum of lengths of all four flaps + length of the cube = 2a + 2a + 12 - 2a = 12 cm
- Width of the tin = sum of widths of all four flaps + width of the cube = 2a + 2a + 8 - 2a = 8 cm
- Height of the cube = side of the cube = a cm

Solving the above equations, we get:
2a + 12 - 2a = 12
2a + 8 - 2a = 8
Hence, a = 4 cm

Therefore, the side of the cube is 4 cm. Hence, option (c) is the correct answer.

Answer: c) 4 cm
