Breakdown of Glucose in a Cell

Process of breakdown of glucose in the presence of oxygen:

  • Glycolysis: The process of breaking down glucose into two molecules of pyruvate in the cytoplasm.

  • Krebs Cycle: Pyruvate enters the mitochondria and gets converted into acetyl-CoA, which enters the Krebs cycle. Here, acetyl-CoA is broken down into carbon dioxide, ATP, and other energy-rich molecules.

  • Electron Transport Chain: The energy-rich molecules from the Krebs cycle are used to generate ATP through a series of redox reactions.

Process of breakdown of glucose in the absence of oxygen:

  • Glycolysis: The process of breaking down glucose into two molecules of pyruvate in the cytoplasm.

  • Fermentation: In the absence of oxygen, pyruvate is converted into either lactic acid or alcohol and carbon dioxide. This process regenerates NAD+ which is required for glycolysis to continue.

Comparison between breakdown of glucose in the presence and absence of oxygen:

  • When oxygen is present, the breakdown of glucose produces more ATP as compared to when oxygen is absent.

  • In the presence of oxygen, pyruvate enters the Krebs cycle and produces more energy-rich molecules as compared to fermentation in the absence of oxygen.

  • Fermentation in the absence of oxygen is less efficient as it only produces 2 ATP molecules per glucose molecule, while the breakdown of glucose in the presence of oxygen produces 36-38 ATP molecules per glucose molecule.

In presence of oxygen, Glucose breaks into carbon dioxide and water and releases 32 ATP energy. in absence of oxygen, Glucose breaks into ethyl alcohol or lactic acid with release of 2 ATP energy. this process is known as anaerobic respiration also known as fermentation.
