  • Zinc in copper sulfate solution is an example of displacement reaction. As is evident from the reactivity series, zinc is more reactive than copper.
  • Zinc gets oxidized, Zn→Zn2++2e−Zn→Zn2++2e−, in the process, it releases 2 electrons. These two electrons are received by the Cu2+ ions in the copper sulfate solution. Cu2+ ions get reduced, Cu2++2e−→CuCu2++2e−→Cu.
  • As through the course of the reaction, the Cu2+ ions are displaced by Zn2+ ions. After the reaction is completed, what is left in the reaction is zinc sulfate solution and Copper in its reduced form.
  • Therefore, the color of the reaction mixture changes from blue (characteristic color of copper sulfate solution) to colorless (characteristic of zinc sulfate solution).
  • The overall reaction is Zn+CuSO4(aq)→ZnSO4(aq)+Cu
