Assertion (A): According to IS: 456; over reinforced sections are not permitted
Reason (R): There is a ductile failure of an over reinforced section
Select your answer based on the coding system given below-
  • a)
Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A
  • b)
Both A and R are true and R is not the correct explanation of A
  • c)
A is true but R is false
  • d)
A is false but R is true
Correct answer is option 'C'. Can you explain this answer?

Assertion (A): According to IS: 456; over reinforced sections are not...
Over Reinforced Section
When the stress in concrete reaches its permissible value before steel, then the section is failed with the sudden collapse of the structure. The resulting beam is known as an over-reinforced beam.
In over reinforced section the steels are not yielded fully, so over reinforced section is considered uneconomical.
Failure is also sudden in over reinforced section because concrete is brittle in nature, and in over reinforced section concrete fails prior to steel.
The design of over reinforced section is also complicated.
∴ Over reinforced section is not recommended by IS 456:200 due to sudden/brittle failure.
∴ Assertion is true, but reason is wrong.

Assertion (A): According to IS: 456; over reinforced sections are not...
Assertion: According to IS: 456; over reinforced sections are not permitted.
Reason: There is a ductile failure of an over reinforced section.

Explanation:

• According to IS: 456, over reinforced sections are not permitted because of the following reasons:
- The concrete in over reinforced sections fails in compression before the steel reinforcement fails in tension. This leads to a sudden and brittle failure of the section.
- Over reinforced sections have a lower ductility compared to under reinforced sections.
- Over reinforced sections are not economical as they require a higher amount of steel reinforcement.

• The reason given in the assertion is correct.

• The reason given in the assertion is the correct explanation of the statement.

• Therefore, option (C) is the correct answer.

Conclusion:

• Over reinforced sections are not permitted as they have a lower ductility and are not economical.

• The reason for not permitting over reinforced sections is due to the sudden and brittle failure of the section.
