Explanation:

India is blessed with a diverse range of wetlands, which are home to a variety of flora and fauna. Wetlands are defined as areas where water is the primary factor controlling the environment and the associated plant and animal life. Inland saline wetlands are an important type of wetland that are characterized by high salt concentrations in the water and soil. These wetlands are found in arid and semi-arid regions of India, where evaporation rates are high and water sources are limited.

Largest inland saline wetland in India:

In India, the largest inland saline wetland is located in Rajasthan. The Sambhar Lake, situated in the Thar desert, is the largest saline lake in India and the largest inland saline wetland in the country. It is spread over an area of 190-230 sq km and is surrounded by the Aravalli hills on one side and the salt flats on the other. The lake is fed by several small streams and receives water from the monsoon rains. The water in the lake is highly saline, with salt concentrations ranging from 60-300 ppt (parts per thousand). The lake is also an important bird sanctuary, with over 200 species of migratory birds visiting it every year.

Other states with inland saline wetlands:

While Rajasthan has the largest inland saline wetland in India, there are other states that also have significant saline wetlands. Some of these include:

  • Gujarat - The Rann of Kutch is a large salt marsh in Gujarat that is characterized by high salt concentrations. It is home to several rare and endangered species of flora and fauna.

  • Haryana - The Sultanpur National Park in Haryana is a freshwater wetland that also has some saline areas. It is an important bird sanctuary and is home to several migratory birds.

  • Madhya Pradesh - The Sardarpur Wetland in Madhya Pradesh is a freshwater wetland that also has some saline areas. It is an important habitat for several species of birds, reptiles, and amphibians.
